Advice on what to learn first to gain basic competency playing the guitar?

In what order should what I should know in order to play the guitar at a basic but a competent level?

Play a few scales, chords, and do exercises. This will get your fingers and hands in shape for playing. You’ll be able to find these on the net from guitar sites…Then I would advise you to get a teacher, beginners book, DVDs, Video’s, or on line lessons, you can even get lessons on youtube :
