What strings should I get for my bass guitar?
Hey, I recently changed my strings on my Bass for the first time, and I don’t like the sound of them. They sound too much like guitar strings than bass strings. I really want some bass strings like the ones I got with my Bass when I first got it. I got a Squier Jazz Bass, which is a pretty cheap one. What kind of stirngs are they?
Could be anything. It entirely depends where it was made (and they’re not all made in the same place).
Best bet for good standard strings might be Rotosound Swing 66 roundwounds. Nice deep bright sound, and they’ll last awhile.

It’s kind of trial and error when it comes to choosing bass strings, but the ones I’ve used that sounded and felt the best are GHS Bass Boomers. Most bassists I know who play rock or pop favor those, since they’re really punchy, but still sound like bass. And at $15 a set, they won’t kill your budget. Here’s a link:

it probably sounds like that because you are used to the dull thud of your old strings, new strings sound brigher & more vibrant for a while (as you said like a guitar) but will start to wear too after a month or 2.
you’ll notice alot of funk bassists regularly change their strings to keep that bright twang when playing, just use it to your advantage

I’ll say don’t go for the most expensive ones "elixir", but also not the cheapest ones.
Go for something like "ghs" or "dr"

I have dean markley blue steels on my fender they have a really bright tone and last forever. But if you don’t like a guitar like sound I would recommend some ghs boomers.

Welcome to your continuing ed. about bass playing!
Ok so you’ve changed strings. B/c the new ones are "new", they’ll tend to sound very bright, almost guitar-ish.
Two things you can do to cope:
1) play ‘em as you normally would. In time, with enough playing, your sweat & finger oil (yum) will coat the strings & deaden them, killing the brightness. How long til you get the tone you’re used to depends on a) how long the original strings were on the bass to develop the kind of tone you’re used to, and b) how many gigs/times you play the instrument. The more often you do the faster the gunk will build on.
2) Boil ‘em! Yep, you read right.
Too late at present since they’re already on the bass but next time you can take a small pot of water, heat it on the stove til the water boils, then take each string out of the packaging & drop ‘em in while they’re still rolled up in a circle. Let ‘em boil for about 3 or 4 minutes. The heated water will kill the newness. Carefully take ‘em out of the water & place on a towel; pat ‘em dry. Wait a bit then string accordingly. It’ll take some time to figure out how long you should boil ‘em to get the "right" kind of tone that you want but it can beat waiting for your finger gunk to build on the strings.
Personally I like bright tones but pioneers like guitarist Eddie Van Halen used to boil their (in his case) guitar strings in order to get the ‘warmer’ tone you get when you’ve been using the strings for some time.
Good luck!
