Do I need to know guitar scales? if so are there any good sites that i could go to to help me learn them because all the ones i went to make it seem difficult and frustrate me. i dont have a teacher either.

No. You don’t have to learn scales if you don’t want to. You can just be a rhythm guitarist and play chords. There is nothing wrong with being a rhythm guitarist but if you want to play lead then yes, you will have to learn scales. Start with the basic minor pentatonic scale in A. It goes like this:
–5—–8—-
–5—–8—-
–5—7——
–5—7——
–5—7——
–5—–8—-
Play one string at a time starting with the first note and play through the scale note by note.
I suggest getting a good teacher to help you learn the scales.

You really should learn guitar scales. They really improve your finger strength. If you don’t do them, you will have to find another way to strengthen your fingers. You can use Youtube, magazines (I used them for a while), books, etc.. Hope this helps you and your playing.

Music scales are like the alphabet. If you want to learn to write your name, it helps to know the alphabet. Likewise, if you want to learn music, scales are important.

Once you learn the scales you can learn the chords and different strumming/picking techniques. A DVD for beginning guitar may be more helpful than the internet, but you can try http://www.learn-acoustic-guitar.com

If you want to have real fun? Yes! You can play and have all the fun in the world just learning pentatonic scales. A fun thing I used to do to keep from getting bored, is… playing the chord progression of A, D, E. Record it. Then play the pentatonic Am scale. up and down and mix things up. Once you learn this…. you will understand why you need to learn scales and you’ll want to learn as many scale patterns as possible and have fun playing different chord progressions.

    Hope this helps?
