Once you understand …
Once you understand everything you can do with major scale patterns (and pentatonic too), then you can move onto more complicated ideas like the harmonic and melodic minor scales. Music theory is a process and each concept builds on the previous. Don’t get ahead of yourself.

The major scale has seven notes and any one of them can function as the root. Each one of these “modes” has a unique sound. I teach all about the modal concept in my book Fretboard Theory and also my DVD entitled Guitar Modes – The Modal Scales of Popular Music.

The chord progression is G and Em. I’m playing the G major/E minor pentatonic scale (they are the same) with pattern one (as I teach it) starting in the open position.
