how do i use scales to play a song that i like for instance- every breath you take(police)? what is scales and what do i need to do to master it to play almost any song that i wish? can some1 plzz shed some light over this? i am so confused by all the scales’s knowledge i see on the websites. thanks in advance

A scale is made up of a group of musical notes in ascending and descending order that can be played on 12 different keys. As for the Sting song, the first chord is an A add 9

Look up the tab of that song…a good tab should have all sorta information such as what Key the song is in and all chords present etc,,,
There are many different scales used for different styles of music and many variations of scales…
Google ‘guitar scales’ to get some fretmaps of them

Both those sites have lessons to look at, also video lessons.

The chords site has a searchable scale thing that will show you any type of scale you want in any key.

Scales are 7 notes that go along with whatever key the music in in.

So if you have a song whose key is A minor, then you’d need to know the Minor scale for guitar.
other useful scales are Major, pentantonic and Blues scales.

A scale can be reduced to a finger pattern. All you need to know is the finger pattern for a type of scale. and every where on the fretboard you can find an "A" you could start the finger pattern for the A minor scale. And that goes all the way up the frets. One pattern is good for all keys, as long as you know the note to start the scale in.
A song in the key of C would have all the patterns starting at the "C" on the fretboard.

Then you’ll know which notes you can and cannot play to a certain song.

BTW, Am is not the key to the Police song. I’ve no idea about that.
