Thanks Steve. You`re a terrific teacher. I`m just trying to develop my fingerstyle technique after many years of flat picking and the clawhammer style is one I`m going to try to develop after seeing your wonderful lesson. Gorgeous guitar by the way.

Hey Steve, we corresponded a couple of years ago about your Mel Bay frailing book.
Can do that pretty good now ,but this is different. Suppose I should be able to do both. Any tab for songs using this technique?

@46Hanky Hiya, any guage works. I use mediums, same as i use in my Celtic fingerstyle. But lights work well also.
Happy clawing,

Steve what gauge strings do you use for claw hammer ?

@cynicaloptimist999 …
@cynicaloptimist999 YES, IT TOOK ME TWO MONTHS. MY ADVICE IS NOT TO WORRY TOOOOOOO MUCH ABOUT ACCURACY AND START GETTING GROOVE. WATCH MOLLY TUTTLE’S YOU TUBE CLAWHAMMER GUITAR CLIP. SHE USUALLY HITS MORE THAN ONE STRING WITH INDEX, BUT THE MELODY IS CLEAR ENOUGH, AND THE GROOOOOOVE IS WHAT MAKES THE MUSIC.
IMHO

I’m having trouble …
I’m having trouble just hitting one string with my index finger.

it’s so cool, cause …
it’s so cool, cause it’s this tiny little movement with so much rhythm, and it just opens up both hands to be able to do other stuff rhythmically and melodically. I’m not good at all yet, but already having a ton of fun with it, impressing my friends and stuff!

You are the right …
You are the right man for this style, I’ve always played with a pick and basic finger patterns, but this looks great and I must learn this. Thank you for this lesson, it reminds me that we never stop learning!

banjoleper May 31, 2010 at 5:59 pm

No need to have …
No need to have long nails. A little one on the index finger is good enough.

Steve,

Are you …
Steve,

Are you doing any plucking with the fingers at all? Or is it all thumb plucking and downstrokes on the hammered-on strings?

By the way I’m from England.

Thanks for the demo. I’ve been playing Clawhammer Banjo for about two years, and have just begun guitar, and have been fighting the habit of the Clawhammer; This will make it more natural for me. Hoping to attend your Zen Banjo workshop in SF.

@ …
@BiddaBiddaCherryPie Taking over 3/4s of the world is by no means an achievement, in my humble opinion. It just outlines the need (as a ‘collective’/national consciousness) to conquer, thus, the need to add more to what we already have. Implying that what we already have, isn’t enough. Indirectly stating our own suckiness. No? ^_^
