Why should I pay for guitar lessons?
There is so much info online (albeit somewhat overwhelming) what would be the benefit for paying for an instructor? Isn’t it mostly just practicing on your own time anyway?
It’s taking me a long time to learn how to play, and I am trying to decide if getting actual personal instruction will help speed things up.
Assisting you with technique posture, phrasing, alternate methods….
Its endless. Sure their is a lot on of information line. But you don’t know what you don’t know.
Maybe just a couple of lessons or counseling sessions

Yes, a good teacher will speed things up–AND will help you maintain your physical health.
I’ve known a lot of self-taught guitarists who wound up needing surgery on their wrists. When you’re a new guitarist, you don’t recognize all your mistakes–and small errors in finger and wrist position become bad habits that limit your abilities and in some cases cause tendinitis or carpal tunnel or some other ruinous condition.
Add that a good teacher knows precisely which exercises and pieces to recommend to give you the most progress–and the question’s answered.
To find a good teacher, I’d start at the music department of a local college or university. If you can start with an advanced guitar major, you’ll have a lower-priced, up-to-date, eager teacher. Otherwise, get referrals from that music department, or as a third choice, ask at the best music store in your town.
I recommend at least a dozen lessons for the beginner to set the technique correctly. After that, maintaining the lessons will yield progress maybe twice as fast as self-study. BTW, as a beginner, try to schedule several short practices daily, and slowly increase time and reduce number as you build stamina–this plan increases your initial progress even more.

I have been playing for two years, without any personal instruction. I completley taught my self via watching my idols play, looking at scales/pentatonics, and just plan old figuring out stuff by ear. People say that you need lessons to get great but its all about passion for playing the instrument, I want to make a career out of it so I practiced everyday for about 5 hours. Its true lessons teach you clarity on movements and exercises but it all comes down to what you feel more comfortable doing. Internet is good too but be carefull there is alot of bullshit out there.

Private teachers are great but can be expensive. A good alternative would be a paid course…better than the free info out there, not as $$ as a private teacher though.

This site for me has been really useful and has many resources. I like it because of all of the videos, and video categories. Plus it has a search function.
It has everything with tags for "guitar" which make it easier finding guitar related material unlike other video sites like youtube.

I found this site a while back and have been visiting it every day since then. I go there to learn to play songs, get equipment reviews, and also to vote.

Sorry to sound like I am boasting this site, but I love it, and it has shown me a lot of new things and I have learned to play a lot of new songs this way. Seeing a video is much easier to learn guitar. (Even has some Piano stuff, and recording software stuff as well)
The newest area added is the forum, and though it doesn’t appear that many people have signed up on it yet, I am sure it will not take too long for this site to take off…Let’s give some support to a great site showing dedication to bringing us great video information for free!
