what first chords should i learn to play the acoustic guitar? Its been sitting in my room for the past year and i finally have the time to take a look at it. Any type of music what are the main chords and can someone please explain to me why some notes are like C7 and with all the numbers?
The first chords you will learn are called ‘open chords’, these chords are; A, C, D, E, G, and, Am, Em, Dm.
Here are diagrams to help you practise:

After you have mastered these chords, and gotten used to changing between them, you can move onto barre chords, and theoretically more advanced chords like the C7.

What if you learned to play by ear. I have some background in piano so i just messed with trying any thing till i built up my fingers and wrist. If you want to play guitar because u love acustic then you may need some good music books. I love playing it. After 6 months of making noise the kids at the hippie school i lived with..someone put the song moma got a squeeze box dance (I trying to remember the name of it), and i was able to play it. From there on i have bought several over the years. There really is no rule on how to play. People who are unique are the ones that get all the credit. You can get music books with a cd that you follow.
