can somebody explain to me how these help?
like what use is it to memorize how to play a certain succession of notes?
also, which ones would you reccomend to learn for someone who knows no guitar scales?
thanks.
aah right thanks.
to the person who says there was no point in learning them apart from improvisation, i’d say you have not really mastered an instrument until you can improvise on it.
i am going to learn loads of scales now.
Different scales correspond with different chord progressions, so if somebody is playing chords and you know the correct scale to play, you know which notes will fit and which ones don’t.
This is very useful for imrovisation, particularly in blues and jazz.
Start with major pentatonic scales as they fit with lots of chords.
The video below shows you some basic scales to start with.
You’ll also find that with a little practice, the notes will come naturally and there’s not much to actually memorize.

There isn’t much point. They can help you out with improvisation but that’s about it. Apart from that they are really hard to remember. They need to be learnt if you are going to do your grades on the guitar though

You should try to learn all of your scales.
They’re the base of music and it makes learning guitar a lot easier if you know them. Everything is derived from scales. Chords, songs…everything. If you master your scales, it teaches you discipline and when it comes time to play chord progressions and such, you already know exactly where the notes are. It just makes your life a whole lot easier in the long run. If you can’t learn all your scales, I’d recommend the C, F, B-flat, E-flat, and G scales. They’re the ones you’ll run into most.

I’m a musician.
Music is made up of single notes (which come from scales) and chords (which are made up of 3 or more scale tone put together). So scales are an important part of musical understanding and worth learning.
Start with the modes of the major scale. And the pentatonic blues scale is important, too. I’m sure there are sites online if you search on google that will have this info for free. There are lots of great method books and books on scales out there, too, that can teach you a lot.

guitar scales are nothing more than a particular scale for a particular key. what else is there to know. If you want to make up licks and actually play within the same key as someone your jamming with learn your scales. if you want to be an ignorant guitarist that knows nothing more than the pentatonic and has no clue as to what notes they are playing go the traditional route. because the guitar is not arranged like the piano it is necessary to memorize scales, thats it.

Scales will help you to right lead-parts and awesome solos that are in the same key as your song. Try major scales and pentatonic. Arpeggios are helpful in much the same way. You DON’T need to play the notes in succession. You memorize them that way and make the notes in scales sound good together.
Scales are widely used by the best of the best as far as guitar goes. I know they suck to learn but it’s worth it.

I play guitar and trust me, scales on guitar are used differently on guitar that other instruments.
