the former of which – is what I wish to accomplish.
scales, would permit one to play any song in any key (note/string) up and down the fret board yes ?
im fed up of knowing just how to play 3 songs on my guitar, including 2 instrumentals for motion picture soundtracks (namely Topgun and days of thunder, but im not Tom Cruise fan)
the songs i can play are:
mmm mmm mmm mmm (by crash test dummies)
love is all around (wet wet wet)
horse with no name (America)
pretty lame by todays standards I agree.
given that chicks only consider guys with guitars cool if they can play alterntive rock or ‘ nu metal’ music , its imperative that I start making progress with the guitar – and fast. otherwise i’ll always be a guitar noob.
a tag I will never be able to live down.
also I wont become better at playing guitar, so that the odds of encountering another guitarist in public who can play ‘way better than I can’ is like, small.
nothing is more demoralising than playing a jam on your guitar infront of a fellow guitarist, only for him to remark ‘wow that was cool…here let me show you mine’, and as he does so, he pwns you with his guitar skills.
really is uncool to pretend to be a guitarist when in fact, youre a noob.
so, any tips advice on scales ? and how experienced does a guitarist need to become until he/she can play ‘by ear’ ?

Hi, first the only way you will be able to play by ear is to listen to songs (any songs) while playing, Then try to find the notes on your guitar, Now when i say the notes what i mean is follow the cords in the song & play like a bass player… Next scales dont impress anyone except other guitar players, since you are trying to impress girls you will need to learn more cords… Cords are what make a song not scales.. Scales are good for solos which is another thing all together… Hope this helps you & good luck

They best way to learn how to play by ear is to learn the different Greek modes. Also makes scales easy. Look it up.

Learn the C major scale and the G major scale and you can move those around into other keys.

You don’t need scales to play by ear.
Learn as many basic chords as you can, and become familiar with them. Then play one of your favourite songs/tunes and listen to it carefully. As it plays try out some chords and see if they are in the same key as the piece. When you’ve found that key, you can listen for the changes and work out which chords fit. It will take time, but it will be worth it.
Hope this helps.

Guitarist, mostly by ear, for over 45 years.
you have to play a lot….. ive only played for about 5 years but when i first started i was playing around 5 or 6 hours a day. just play everything. look up the tabs to every song you know any just play through them.. you dont need to learn the song, just go through it and learn the new chords. then go through songs and try to do the solos by ear.. slow it down.. go through it 15 hundred times if you have to… thats what it take. good luck
