what are they used for?
Hi Rand
You ask a simple question and obviously, the answer are not quite correct here.
Scales are used for improvisation purpose. You can learn major, minor, plus the mode scales, like pentatonic and diminshed.
In heavy metal, we tend to use different scales mixed with minor, diminished etc… to add color to our playing.
Ex. for arpeggios, the diminished chord is beautiful as passing tones.

I learned from the Johnny Ramone school of guitar.
Alot of my friends say it sounds like I went through lessons and all that. I just played along with records in my room when I wasn’t in school. I can’t read or write music, don’t know any scale but I can figure out most any song just by listening to it.. I’ve become so familiar with the guitar.

Scales definitely help during improvisation. If you know your scales well you can play better solos. You will know which notes to play at the right time. If you are into Jazz & Blues, learn your minor pentatonic scale.

Dude scales are awsome when your playing lead and there are alternating power chords backing you up, they help alot in times of guitar player distress.

Your fingers become stronger, you can play other songs faster, also good for picking better, and songs come from scales. They’re good, they’ll just make you an all around better guitarist
